Xi Visits Wuhan in Sign China Sees Coronavirus Under Control

Xi Visits Wuhan in Sign China Sees Coronavirus Under Control China's president visited Wuhan, the center of the global virus outbreak, on Tuesday, his first trip there since the start of the outbreak.

Xi's trip to Wuhan came as parts of his country return to normalcy, and was a sign of the diminishing threat the illness presents in China as it spreads west.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover. In mainland China, where the virus first exploded, more than 80,000 people have been diagnosed and more than 58,000 have so far recovered.

China recorded just 19 new cases of the virus Tuesday.

Xi went to a hastily built hospital, talked to patients and encouraged staff to "firm up confidence in defeating the epidemic."

He then visited Wuhan residents under quarantine at home.

Wuhan and nearby cities have been under lockdown since then, though, in a virus-containment measure.
