February is known as the month of love and romance. Across the world, Valentine’s Day is dedicated to lovers, the infatuated, the adored, and puppy-loved. Around the world, the admired are showered with cards, chocolates, fragrances, dinners, jewelry, flowers, proposals and weddings.

History of St. Valentine’s Day
The feast of St. Valentine was first celebrated on February 14th, around 496. It honored three Christian saints, all named Valentine that ironically all died on February 14th.

Many myths surround the three saints. The most often heard is the legend that placed the Roman Catholic priest, Valentine, against the Roman emperor Claudius II. In order to have strong, undistracted soldiers, the emperor declared that all young men remain single. St. Valentine found the decree morally wrong. In defiance, he privately married couples. When discovered, the emperor had him arrested and sentenced to death.

Another legend is the imprisoned Valentine performing a miracle of bringing sight to his jailer, Asterius’ visually impaired daughter. After obtaining her renewed sight, the daughter fell in love with Valentine. It was believed that on the eve of his death he wrote her a letter. The letter ended with his final salutation, “from your Valentine.”

British Influence on St. Valentine’s Day
It wasn’t until the 14th century, that Valentine’s Day was born, as it is known today. Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of, “The Canterbury Tales,” a distinguished British poet and the “Father of English Literature,” paired his infamous poem, “The Parliament of Fowls,” to the romantic holiday.

The 1381 poem was developed to honor the engagement of England’s 15 year old Richard II and the young Anne of Bohemia. The lengthy poem tied the followers of St. Valentine, the annual February 14th bird mating Spring celebration and the royal engagement to romance.

The poem was written in Old English style. A line in the modern version of the poem is referenced as, “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day, When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.” This line solidified the birth of the holiday. Since then, it justified the public display of bestowing gifts, cards and loyal affection to loved ones.

European Influence On Valentine’s Day

In 1415, the Duke of Orleans wrote loving words to his wife, while detained in the Tower of London. The other was authored by Margery Brews, in 1477, to her betroth. Both artifacts referenced their endeared as a “Valentine.”

The Valentine cards were crafted on special paper. The first homemade cards were embellished with lace, ribbons, poems and drawings. They were privately and discreetly hand delivered or anonymously left behind for the receiver to secretly find.

It also allures over 6 million couples to announced their endless and committed love with an engagement. The ultimate gift, for a Valentine’s Day proposal, is symbolized with an expensive diamond ring.
