UNIT 731 - Japan's Biological Warfare Project -
Well ... a gigantic debacle is how happening with Kohei Horikoshi, the mangaka of Boku no Hero Academia.
The author gave a villain a name that references Japanese war crimes during WWII - Unit 731 specifically, where many Chinese and Korean prisoners were subjected to experiments that make Mengele look like a Spongebob character. It's a fitting name, because [spoilers !!!] the doctor who uses has this alias is abducting children, performing horrifying experiments on them, and turning them into monsters. Despite the fact that the author portrays what happened as horrible with this reference, Korean and Chinese fans were outraged. He publicly apologized and is changing the character name, but they're still furious. They're pretending he didn't formally apologize already and are bombarding Shonen Jump with demands that he pay for offending them.
This is a horrifying new magnitude of outrage culture/cancel culture. These are my thoughts on this bizarre, awful issue.
