How Many Countries has the United States Recognised - But No Longer Exist?

How Many Countries has the United States Recognised - But No Longer Exist? Over the past two hundred and fifty years, the United States has recognised well over two hundred countries. But how many of these no longer exist? In this video, I look at all the countries the US once recognised, but have now disappeared.

Welcome to Independent Thinking. A channel dedicated to international relations, independence disputes, secession and the origins of countries.

Using information from the US State Department, I present all the states that Washington once recognised, but have now become extinct. In some cases, these state deaths were the result of state formation in Europe in the nineteenth century. The unification of Germany and Italian unification were particularly significant in this regard. However, there are many other stories behind the cases of extinct states. Alongside familiar modern cases - such as Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia - there are also many forgotten countries, such as Lew Chew (Loochoo), the Orange Free State, and the Hanseatic Republics. The Kingdom of Hawaii and the Republic of Texas even put in an appearance!
