China travel ban alone could have $6bn effect on GDP Sky News Contributor Caleb Bond says areas around Australia like the China towns are “struggling immensely” because a significant portion of their customer base – international students – are still trapped in China.

The Australian is reporting the Morrison government is expected to announce an extension of the travel ban which could have a $6 billion effect on the Australian GDP according to banks.

Universities are expected to suffer from a travel ban extension as many international students will not make it back for the start of semester classes, which Mr Bond said for places like China town the news is “devastating”.

Mr Bond told Sky News host Peter Gleeson the effects of coronavirus both economically and to the wider society have “totally blown us away”.

“Half of Australia’s … Chinese students are still [held] up in China [and] they’re not allowed to come over here”.
